Wrestling

The PAL Wrestling Program is open to K through 8th graders.
Our focus at the Westfield PAL Wrestling program is to provide a safe environment for youth athletes in Westfield and the opportunity to learn wrestling from a knowledgeable and caring coaching staff.  We are committed to providing excellent instruction to our wrestlers by training them to be competitive and teaching sportsmanship, discipline and teamwork, while also encouraging them to enjoy learning wrestling while having fun.

RECREATIONAL/NOVICE PROGRAM – Grades K-3 

The “rec” program is for the 1st and 2nd year wrestlers in grades K-3. Wrestlers are taught the basics of the sport with an emphasis on having fun, developing basic skills and athleticism.

Practices will be held in the Westfield HS Wrestling Room on Wednesday and Saturday:

• Wednesday practices 5:30-6:30 pm (first practice 12/4)

• Saturday practices in December 11:30-12:45, Jan/Feb practices will have an earlier start time 9:00-10:15 am (first practice 12/7)

The season will consist of various “King of the Mat” and instructional novice matches with neighboring towns ending in late February. Registration cost is $240 which includes uniforms ((1/4 zip, shorts and t-shirt).

Singlets are provided for use during the season and must be returned at the end . Wrestlers must provide their own headgear and wrestling shoes.

TRAVEL TEAMS GRADES 4-6:

The travel team programs provide mid-level to advanced technique and training with the practices starting the week of November 11th. This program is for all wrestlers (new and returning) in 4th-6th grade. The team may also be suitable for select 2nd and 3rd graders who have demonstrated considerable progress at the Recreational Team level and who display the maturity to participate in structured practices and competitive match situations.

Parents of 2nd and 3rd graders who feel they may be eligible for the travel program must consult with the coaching staff prior to registering.

The PAL will be sponsoring 3 (K-6) dual meet teams for this upcoming season Central Jersey V and JV and Mid Jersey Varsity.

Wrestlers will be split into 3 practice groups – once we have our final registration numbers we will split the groups by experience, maturity and age.

• Group 1 “Varsity” – Practices Tuesday and Thursday – 6:00-7:30 pm
• Group 2 “JV 1” – Practices Monday and Thursday – 6:00-7:30
• Group 3 “JV 2” – Practices Monday 6:00-7:30 and Wednesday 6:30-7:30

Registration cost is $300 and includes uniform (1/4 zip, joggers and t-shirt)

Singlets are provided for use during the season and must be returned at the end. Wrestlers must provide their own headgear and wrestling shoes.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/ Northern NJ TRAVEL TEAM GRADES 7-8: 

The Westfield Middle School Team practices after school Monday through Friday starting in late November.  New or less experienced 6th graders as well as 7th and 8th graders participate on the Westfield Middle School Team. 

PAL Registration cost is $160 and includes uniforms. The preference is for Middle School wrestlers to sign up via the PAL site to ensure they have uniforms in time for the season and be added to the PAL communication lists. Middle School wrestlers also need to sign up through the Board of Education Athletics for the team.

The Northern NJ travel team is the most competitive league the PAL participates in. The league is a combination of the PAL and Middle School wrestlers. Selection for this league is handled by Coach Wnuck and more info will be shared as we get closer to the season

Singlets will be provided. Wrestler must provide headgear and wrestling shoes.
